What Happens During a Piano Lesson with Me

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

Learning to play the piano should never feel like a chore — it should be something you genuinely look forward to.
At the heart of my teaching is a simple belief: music should always be fun.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or have played before, my goal is to help you progress at a steady pace while keeping the experience light-hearted and engaging. I’ve found that when lessons are enjoyable, students stay motivated and confident, and that’s when real progress happens.

Lesson Length & Format

Each lesson lasts for around 30 minutes and takes place once a week. This is the perfect length to learn something new, practice key techniques, and still have fun without feeling rushed.

Lessons can be held in person at my home or online, using FaceTime or WhatsApp Video. Both options work beautifully — it’s simply about what suits you best.

To make the most of each session, I encourage students to practice for 10–20 minutes per day between lessons.
This daily practice helps build confidence, improve coordination, and reinforce what we’ve covered together. You don’t need hours every day — just a little regular time at the piano makes a huge difference.

A Typical Lesson Breakdown

While I always tailor lessons to each individual student, there is a general structure that keeps things focused and productive while still leaving space for creativity and flexibility.

1. Warm-Up (First 5 Minutes)

We start each lesson with a few warm-up exercises to get those fingers moving and the brain switched on.
These warm-ups are often based on what we covered the previous week — scales, finger patterns, or short drills that help strengthen your technique. Think of it as stretching before a workout; it helps you play more smoothly and with greater control.

2. Review & Reflection (Next 10 Minutes)

Next, we’ll review the pieces or exercises you practiced during the week. This is a relaxed, encouraging space where we can celebrate your progress and work through any tricky sections together.

I’ll give you practical feedback and demonstrate little tweaks that can make a big difference — perhaps how to improve your hand positioning, play more expressively, or add dynamics to bring your music to life.

We’ll also gradually build on your musical theory — helping you understand things like rhythm, timing, and notation, so you can read and interpret music with growing confidence.

3. Learning Something New (Next 10 Minutes)

This is often the highlight of the lesson — learning new music!
Each week, I’ll introduce one or two new pieces suited to your level and musical interests. It might be a well-known tune you’ve always wanted to play, or something designed to challenge your skills in a new way.

During this part, we’ll also talk about sight reading, musical expression, and interpretation — how to make the music your own rather than just playing the notes on the page. You’ll start to see how every song tells a story, and you’ll learn to bring that story to life through your playing.

4. Wrap-Up & Practice Planning (Final 5 Minutes)

Before we finish, there’s time for questions or anything you’d like to go over again. We’ll then create a clear practice plan for the week ahead.
This plan includes what to focus on, any exercises to repeat, and guidance on how to structure your practice time so you feel confident and purposeful between lessons.

Lessons Tailored to You

No two students are the same — and that’s what makes teaching so rewarding!
Each of my lessons is completely tailored to suit your ability, age, learning style, and goals.

If you’re a beginner, we’ll start with the foundations — learning hand positions, simple pieces, and reading music in a fun, achievable way.
If you’re more experienced, we can explore advanced techniques, theory, and more expressive playing styles.

Even though I follow a general lesson structure, I’m always flexible. If you’re struggling with something or have a particular area you’d like to work on, I’ll adapt the lesson to give you the extra support you need.

My Teaching Ethos

My approach blends structure with creativity, discipline with fun.
I truly believe that learning the piano should be as joyful as it is educational.

The piano is an incredible instrument — expressive, emotional, and endlessly versatile — and I love helping students discover their own musical voice. Whether your goal is to play for pleasure, perform in front of others, or simply challenge yourself, I’ll guide you every step of the way.

For me, piano lessons aren’t just about notes and keys — they’re about confidence, creativity, and personal growth. Each lesson is a step forward, and each bit of progress is worth celebrating.

The Journey of Learning

Learning to play the piano is a journey — and we travel it together.
There will be moments of laughter, discovery, and the occasional wrong note (which is perfectly fine — they’re part of the process!).

The important thing is to enjoy every stage of learning, to feel proud of your progress, and to find joy in the music you create. With the right blend of encouragement, structure, and fun, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can grow as a musician.

So, whether you dream of playing your favourite songs, mastering classical pieces, or just want to enjoy a relaxing and creative hobby — I’m here to help you make it happen.
